Towards the identification of regulators of wood formation under cold

RT-qPCR analyses of stem tissues of Eucalyptus plants grown for 7 weeks at 4°C revealed that lignin biosynthetic genes were up-regulated in cold conditions and especially those involved in S monomeric units. This was confirmed by histochemical and biochemical analyses showing an increase of the lignin content as well as of the S/G ratio. Transcriptomic, biochemical and histochemical data were integrated using multivariate statistical analyses and correlation networks allowed the identification of cold-regulated MYB genes highly correlated to lignin biosynthesis [Ployet et al. in preparation], which were selected for further functional characterization.
