A post-genomic approach to identify new transcription factors involved in the regulation of SCW formation in Arabidopsis

Although there have been recent major breakthroughs in identifying regulatory mechanisms involved in SCW formation in Arabidopsis, many unknown regulatory players remain to be discovered. Within the framework of the FP7 RENEWALL project gathering the leading European cell wall scientists, we have developed a post-genomic approach by combining four independent in-house SCW-related transcriptome datasets to identify novel TFs dictating lignin profiles in Arabidopsis. The phenotyping of corresponding mutant lines revealed six mutant lines exhibiting altered lignification patterns. Two of them (blh6 and a zinc finger TF) presented hypo-lignified SCW. Three others (myb52, myb-like TF, hb5) showed hyper-lignified SCW whereas the last one (hb15) showed ectopic lignification [Cassan-Wang et al. 2013].
